A small island settlement in the Dampier Strait with a year-round manta jetty and traditional woven crafts — about 200 residents.
Arborek is a small Dampier Strait village of around two hundred residents who welcome respectful visitors under arranged protocol. The jetty in front of the village sees reef mantas year-round — a remarkable site for snorkelers without scuba gear.
The Arborek jetty extends into a sandy channel where reef mantas pass through and occasionally come up to cleaning stations on the pylons. Snorkelers wait at the edge of the pier and let the mantas come past — the etiquette is no chasing, no touching, and minimum approach distance.
The village is famous for its woven palm-leaf crafts, particularly the noken bags that the Papuan women weave traditionally. Charter visits include a community fee that funds the school, and many groups buy crafts directly from the makers.
Arborek features in any Dampier Strait charter. Send dates and we will arrange the village visit with full cultural protocol.
